Further evidence emerges to support the case that Gallagher lied
And the Irish Times are complicit through their silence
There has been another interesting development in the Aisling Murphy murder trial. Michael O’Toole, assistant editor and crime correspondent for the Daily Star, put out a tweet which appears to be a direct quote from court.
O’Tooles tweet is quite vague, but from other sources I have deducted that it was Detective Superintendent Pat O’Callaghan who revealed to Michael Bowman SC, under cross examination, that the decision was made to keep the cause of death ’tight’.
The decision was made by the investigation team after Puska had volunteered information without prompt, that he had ‘cut’ the victim. This information was not passed on to the media. Detective Garda Fergus Hogan, who questioned Puska in hospital was not even informed of the cause of death.
So where did Conor Gallagher get the impression from that the victim died from strangulation? The evidence would presently and increasingly suggest, that his chief source was his own imagination.
Over a week has passed since both he and his editor, Conor Lally, went on a blocking spree, yet there has still been no statement from the newspaper they are both employed by, regarding the falsehood they both presented to the public as fact.
This despite that same newspaper running numerous stories since (including a tweet from Lally), citing the true cause of death as of the previous false one was never printed. The most recent by Mary Carolan.
Excerpts from Carolan’s article
Have you quizzed your colleagues on this Ms. Carolan? Is it not your duty as a journalist to display some ethics and integrity by holding your peers to the highest of standards?
Or how about you Michael O’Toole? You are from a rival newspaper so have no skin in the game. Are you happy to let Gallagher and Lally bring your profession into disrepute?
Although your opinions on migration seem to align with Gallagher (judging by your previous tweets), that should not prevent you from seeing the value in this as a news story. The truth is still the truth, even if it’s detrimental to our own views and beliefs.
The intricacies of the case are for the legal teams of both the state and the defence to thrash out. Let’s hope that justice prevails and Aisling’s family can find some sort of peace after their loved one was stolen from them in such a violent, barbaric manner.
However, we can scrutinise the behaviour of the media and hold them to account for their clear abandonment of ethics in this case. They are fair game. I have contacted the Garda press office for an official statement. They were respectful but declined to comment.
This is no small issue. When Catherine Martin’s, Ministry for Truth - Coimisiún na Meán, clicks fully into gear and imposes its yoke of censorship upon us all, the Irish Times will no doubt be one of the reputable news sources we will be directed to for reliable information.
A newspaper which appears to have lied unapologetically. The fact both Gallagher and Lally have subsequently blocked anyone on Twitter who have dared to ask them for an explanation, only adds weight to their possible guilt in fabricating a story.
How can we ever again have any trust in the print media, if they not only lie, but also refuse to address it when caught out. Worse still completely ignore it as though it never even happened.
The fact that Gallagher has not been sacked yet speaks volumes. He has since been on podcasts and wrote another scandalous article in which he wrote there was no evidence Yousef Palani had been radicalised despite beheading two gay men.
This is against the backdrop of a separate article not too long ago, in which he referred to Irish citizens who engaged in peaceful protests, as ‘extremists’. (I will post the links to both articles below).
This man’s position is now untenable. If the Irish Times is to rescue any sliver of credibility, he must be forced to clear out his desk and seek employment elsewhere.
Alternatively, the message is loud and clear. They will lie with impunity, if it suits and/or serves a specific agenda. The silence from the rest of the mainstream media is deafening.
